2021 hunt has begun...
Monday, November 8, 2021 - Day 1 of Week #1
Its 6:30 am. Its 21degrees Fahrenheit (-6 Celsius). No snow on the ground.
Forecast for snow starting Tuesday.
Chris, Josh, John, Wayne and Justin are loaded up with guides Randal and Larry.
The day begins!

Whaaaaaat?.... Great news folks! I am just informed that there are TWO MORE DEER down!
A total of THREE SHOTS HAD RANG OUT IN THE FOREST WITHIN 20 MINUTES!
Larry, our guide says: "Three deer bagged and tagged"!
It's a beautiful day here in Saskatchewan!

And so it begins....
We woke up to it snowing this morning ... a nice snowfall.
... and it continued to fall ...
We only have 5 hunters this week and Chris is still out there in the treestand.
He has been seeing a lot of deer but not "the right one" yet!
He is loving his time out there!

Our guide, Randal, shows how close the deer get to him.
Chris goes home without a deer but this is what he had to say:
"I have been on a lot of hunts but this is, hands down, the best experience I have ever had!
I sat in the stand for 5 1/2 days (53 hours) and out of that time, there was maybe 3 hours total with no deer in front of me.
I saw 25-30 bucks overall plus the does and fawns. I could have take a buck every day.
I have shot a lot of big deer. I had a number in my head and I didn't see it.... if I'm not going to mount it, I'm not going to shoot it.
I'm coming back next year ... Kathy already has my deposit!"
Monday, November 15, 2021 - Day 1 of Week #2
First day of week #2 and the guys were off at 6:30 this morning.
It wasn't long and Jeff witnessed a nice12 pointer chase a10 pointer off of the bait. The 12 pointer then went off into the surrounding woods... Jeff knew he was still out there and waited very patiently...
Jeff's patience paid off ... he got his 12 pointer!
This is Jeff's second time hunting with us. In 2019, he came on his own and this year he returned with his Dad. In 2022 he will again return with his Dad, Lyle and two friends!

It was a good white tail deer hunt day here at Makwa River Outfitters.
The weather is starting to act up... the forecast is for a foot of snow tomorrow - its going to be a challenge.
Tuesday , November 16, 2021 - Day 2 of Week #2
The weather man's forecast of snow yesterday was not wrong! We are in blizzard conditions today.
10" inches of snow on the ground by noon here by the lodge. Our guide Larry tells me that there is at least 18 - 20 inches in the forest where the guys are hunting.
But ... the deer movement should be good today because of the blizzard!

Maneuvering with the heavy, wet blowing snow was a real challenge ... good thing that our guides are so great! They needed two quads helping each other to get Lyle, Norm and the deer out of the forest. The highways are a mess too ... hard to see anything but with the expertise of the guides, they are back at camp, with the experience of hunting in a blizzard (that makes for a good story when they get home)!

Tom and Chris are still out there in their stands and we expect that it will continue to be an epic hunting day! Ha ha ha ... the love of the hunt cannot be discourage by a "little bit of snow"! We always have a plan for this kind of thing and it just makes the guides jobs a lot more "interesting"! Mother Nature can be a real "Mother .." sometimes! LOL! It looks like we will be needing to put the tracks on at least one quad to bring the boys home tonight.

Mother Nature thinks she's got us .... Walker says "Bring it..."!!
Chris is looking for at least a 10 pointer. Today, this 8 pointer made himself quite at home and was even sleeping on the bait pile but it isn't even close to what we consider shootable. Not seeing anything else come in, Chris radioed his guide Randal, telling him to come pick him up. As Chris was getting himself down the stand, Randal looked over his shoulder and said was "Oh no ... your 8 pointer just got run off by a really nice 10 pointer"! Ha ha ha, isn't that how hunting goes!!
Friday, November 19, 2021 - Day 5 of Week #2
We continue to cheer Chris on from the sidelines. Chris had hunted with us 21-22 years ago with the Eddie Dierkens group so having him here in camp brought up a lot of fun memories. The Eddie Dierkens group were a crazy, fun loving group that will always be remember with much fondness here at Makwa River Outfitters. Eddie has now passed on but his spirit lives forever here.

Chris goes home without a deer. He saw deer, but just like the Chris from last week, he had a certain number in his head and he just did not see it.
Monday, November 22, 2021 - Day 1 of Week #3
Early in the day, Larry, the guide sends me a quick message that there are two deer down and then he leaves me hanging while the go retrieve the deer! I hate that ... who shot?
Come on... someone tell me ... who shot? ... WHO? ... WHO???
After pacing the floor, I finally get the notification ...
Congratulations Walker and Ron! They both shot at about the same time this morning!

Our guide, Larry, had an amazing encounter with raw nature today.
This is a beautiful female adult Canadian Lynx.
the Canadian Lynx is quite elusive and is typically a nocturnal and solitary creature. Privileged and few are those that witness what Larry has today. They are not fast runners and rely on skill and patience and wait until their prey is close enough to pounce on them. They eat rabbits, birds, porcupines, beaver, mice, etc. Breeding season is March and April. Gestation is 62-74 days. Litters of 3-4 are produced once every 1-2 years and are raised solely by the female.

11:00 am ... a hunter's call on the radio: "I got one!"
No wait ... there is another deer down too! Yep.. its going to be another great deer hunting day at Makwa River Outfitters!
No...just wait again! Don't leave the room! There is ANOTHER DEER DOWN!
Whoot whoot! Three deer!
The first two deer coming in are from our father/son duo, Dick and Rich.
Dick was the one who called in at 11:00. When the guides pulled up to him, he thought "What the heck? What's Rich doing on the back of the quad?" Then he saw the deer in the back .. Rich had shot first!

Rich's story:
"When we pulled up to my treestand this morning, there was a doe at the foot of the tree so we waited and watched for a minute. Walker was guiding me today. When the doe walked away, he pulled up to the treestand and allowed me to climb up the ladder. I was up there getting my blind ready .. knocking some of last night's snow off the top of the blind and I glanced out the window and there he was ... a big buck standing at the bait! I didn't even have my firearm up there yet. I whispered to Walker "Gun ... gun ... GUN!" and he quickly handed it to me. The buck walked a little ways into the forest but I could still see him. I took the shot and it was good! Walker's response: "That doesn't happen often!"

Rich's text to me while he was still in the forest:
"Kathy
I just killed the biggest buck of my life and my Dad got one too! Mai's tagged out at MAKWA on the first day!!!"
An exciting day for sure! But remember that there are THREE deer down today! Dick K has a deer too!

We have one hunter left out there and that is Luke. Luke had a bit of an issue getting here as he was unfortunate to have been in contact with that dang Covid 19 and could not fly here with his family last week. He did his required isolation and was retested and we squeezed him in for this week.

Well folks .. that's the end of our 2021 season.
